About Me

A non-professional Asian bodywork practitioner what the distinction is between watsu and massage could result in confusion and even misdirected suggestions regarding how to perform the watsu. The differences between them are distinct. It is important to know the distinctions between the different types of watsu before you begin your own training.

Watsu is also known under the names Japanese Shiatsu or Watsu massage. It is a type of bodywork therapy that employs hands-on techniques, primarily to perform deep stretching and passive stretching. Watsu is usually performed in private sessions with a practitioner or therapist who gently massages, manipulates, stretches or gently rubs the receiver in warm, body-confessed water. The aim is to clear the energy channels, release tension from the body and restore flexibility, healing stiffness, and also relieve the receiver of tension.

Unlike most types of bodywork that are therapeutic, watsu does not focus on a specific area of the body. This gentle bodywork uses the hands and fingers of practitioners to treat different muscles. This kind of treatment is often described as a gentle massage without the stress and pressure of massage therapy. While some therapists employ a mixture of manipulation and touch to achieve results, many practitioners prefer to use hands-on techniques and rarely use warm, soothing waters or music.

Contrary to most types of traditional Japanese treatment, watsu does not focus on the root of the problem but on its effect. In other words, instead of focusing on the problem it self, the treatment focuses to ease the patient's tension and stress through gentle and focused stretches and manipulation. In the end patients notice a decrease in pain, a sense of well-being, and the ability to regulate their breathing and heart rate. This helps them live more active and a fulfilling life. People who undergo treatment for watsu can expect to release tension, restore motion range and improve flexibility and muscle strength, feel a deep relaxation, and the release of mental stress and tension.

Most people who undergo watsu are taught the watsu and aqua therapy simultaneously. In other words, they typically receive an entire treatment program during which they engage in both activities to build their physical bodies and minds. The sessions can be casual and quick and last just a few minutes at one time or up to a half-hour. Between sessions, those who participate in aquatic bodywork such as Watsu can receive stretches and relaxation techniques. They can also receive massage treatments that only use the muscles and soft tissue of the body, such the acupressure or Swedish massage. Tea drinking is one of the common practices in watsu sessions.

Based on descriptions from traditional Chinese medicine, watsu (the medical term used to describe this treatment) is part of a larger field called "Majja" or "Bodywork." Like shiatsu, wabi encourages a balance between the chi and qi. However, unlike shiatsu or other types of bodywork, Wabi is performed by trained, qualified therapists who carry out a series of gentle stretching and exercises using their feet and hands to apply pressure to specific parts of the body, not using mechanical tools.

There are many variations of watsu. Some therapists are regarded as "chiros," while others are considered to be Reiki masters. According to the reiki council of early 1980s, the most notable differences between shiatsu and Watsu are in the method of the delivery of healing energy as well as the focus on breath control and the balancing. As western medical schools have started to recognize the positive effects of reiki on the medical profession in general, there has been a growing interest in learning this ancient alternative method of health care, with over twenty reiki schools available across the globe today.

Dr. Mikao Ui Dr. Mikao Ui, an ordained Japanese Christian minister, introduced Reiki to westerners for the first time in 2021. He had been studying an eastern form of healing arts for many years. Dr. Usui's teachings quickly spread throughout Japan and brought it into the minds of many westerners who were amazed at its gentle, natural method of healing. Today, hundreds of thousands of people all over the world continue to learn and practice the art of reiki. Reiki is not only a popular choice for westerners, but also in countries of the east like China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. With the increased exposure has come widespread interest from those looking to integrate reiki into their daily lives.
